A Reporter's Life

Recall prediction

It is now minutes into the day of California's historic gubernatorial recall election, and I've decided to post my predictions. You'll note that this reporter has kept her weblog recall-election-free, but what California resident could completely ignore an election in which there are 135 candidates running?

I think both propositions will fail, Gov. Gray Davis will be recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger (better known as "Arnold" or "The Terminator") will be elected.

My candidate reasoning goes like this: Davis and (current Lt. Gov.) Cruz Bustamante will split the Democratic vote, while Schwarzenneger and Tom McClintock will split the Republican vote. I think enough people will vote for the recall simply because they're saying, "Why not?" though it won't be by such a large majority that nobody votes to keep Davis. This means the Democratic candidates will more evenly split the vote than the Republicans, simply because Schwarzenneger still has a huge following -- despite allegations of sexual misconduct. His following extends beyond party lines, so that will give him the extra votes he needs to win.

So there you have it. I'm not saying that's my view; it's just my prediction. As the votes roll in, I'll be at work, watching and waiting to finish my part of our paper's coverage of this very unique piece of California history.

Layla, I think you're right about the ultimate turnout, but the Democrats aren't going to split between Davis and Bustamecha... excuse me, Bustamante. People who vote 'no' on the recall still get to pick a candidate to replace Davis.

My guess would be, Arnold still pulls out in front. If the sexual harrassment stories had any effect, it would probably sway folks to keep Davis.

Tom: That's a good point that I've considered before, but I just have this feeling that Arnold will get more votes. Maybe it's the Hollywood thing that will work for him -- though the fact that he's up against a Hispanic man is certainly interesting, given California's number of Hispanic residents. I haven't looked into statistics to see what percentage are registered to vote, though.

What are the "both propositions" you refer to?

Posted by: TOM at 8:44 AM, October 07, 2003

Proposition 53 allocates a certain percentage of the state's general fund to state and local infrastructure (which ranges from roads to waterways to parks to classrooms). I think this will fail partly because people don't know what "infrastructure" means, and partly because nobody wants to think about spending money right now.

Proposition 54 prohibits state and local governments from classifying people by race and ethnicity. I think this will fail because it's also not very clear to voters.

I'm amused that you felt the need to follow up one of the world's most famous names with a paranthetical aside explaining who he was in more detail.

Hmmm, that's a good point, Maryam. I guess it's the reporter instinct coming out: Never, ever assume your readers already know what and who you're writing about.

So now that the votes are tallied, how did your prediction go? I obviously know that you were RIGHT, but I'm curious to see if the votes fell the way you expected in terms of the splitting and who the top candidates would be.

looking for information on valium - such as side effects, pharmacology and dosage information?

valium is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and muscle spasms.

Posted by: valium at 6:57 PM, December 27, 2004

Cheap valium is available on the internet and prices drastically lower than your local pharmacy. This is because major pharmaceutical companies have a legal stranglehold on the US which basically allows them a monopolistic pricing structure.
