It looks like you're running Movable Type, 2.63.

By visiting their website, they're on a far newer version. Perhaps that new version has some kind of spam-prevention stuff built in.

I don't know how you'd go about upgrading, but that's where I would look first. If you stick to Movable Type, you likely won't have to start from scratch on your existing blogs, comments, and settings.

Does the action line of your blog form have to use this exact url? http://www.thesmudge.com/cgi-bin/mt-comments.cgi

Because, if you could tweak it slightly (like, say, change "mt-comments" to "nt-comments"), you could shut this down and make a new one.

THEN, put the new form action url into entity code, like my email address in the "send your own thoughts" link at http://thesmudge.com/shapeshifter/Roswell/stuff/rosblog.htm
Mouse over the 'send your own thoughts' link to see the email address in the status bar of the browser. Then view the source code and do an Edit\Find in Page for "send your own thoughts" to see the entity coding.
There's a program somewhere that will do it for you. But for a snippet of code, I just used this page:
http://www.bbsinc.com/symbol.html

It seemed to work for me for email spam.

Change the name of that post button to something else, like "ellmyruh". Then there's another file in your cgi-bin directory where you'll have to change the word "post" to "ellmyruh"... I'll see if I can find that. I went from 45+ spambots each night to none.

Aha. Then just change MT::App::comments.pm in sub init where it reads

if ($q->param('post')) {
$q->param('__mode', 'post');

change to

if ($q->param('ellmyruh')) {
$q->param('__mode', 'post');

And you're spamless.

Thomas's suggestion looks best, but if that doesn't work and nothing else nice presents itself, you could always go to a registration system where only registered users can post. But that sounds like it would be terrible. So do what Thomas said if you haven't already. Thomas is the man.
