A Reporter's Life

Columnist arrested

A Sacramento Bee columnist who frequently mentions police officers in his columns was arrested today on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence. The accuser has already recanted.

R.E. Graswich is a likeable guy who was both funny and interesting when he spoke to a column writing class I took a few years ago. I do wonder, though, if the woman recanted because he has an insane number of connections and works for the Bee. The wounds don't sound serious, and I wonder if I'd do the same thing, knowing that such an arrest could become a story of national interest.

Actually, if the claim was legitimate, I wouldn't recant. I'm not that type of a person. If the claim was not legitimate -- no, I'm also not the type to make a bogus claim.

It's so, so common for domestic violence victims to change their stories like that. They'll probably have to drop this because of the victim not cooperating, and they'll never get to the bottom of it. And yeah, I'm sure it doesn't help that Graswich is locally famous.
From the description in the article, it could easily be an equal-fault situation; it sounds like she might have done her share of physical fighting. People often leap to the wrong conclusion about the man being at fault in these situations.

Not only working for the Bee, but a Sports columnist. I didn't know that he had moved away from sports but he's been around as long as I've read the Bee. Either way, it is a black mark against him to some degree.

Wow. I sat near Graswich for a couple years, after he started writing his column (about three or four years ago), up until I left the Bee last summer. I have to say I find this suprising -- in my experience he's a very friendly an congenial guy, and I don't think I've ever even heard him raise his voice. I know that work and personal lives don't always mesh, but still, it seems out of character.

WOMEN: Wouldn't you be pissed if you went home and suprisingly, found another woman there?
