A Reporter's Life

Library rights

I think everyone, especially those in the United States, should read this article. I wonder how many people know that the FBI could be looking at all the books they've ever checked out or bought, and the FBI doesn't even have to show cause before stomping through all sorts of records that are normally private.

Oh, it's nothing new. It's just the Patriot Act that was created after 9/11. What's mind-boggling is that the government really thinks would-be terrorists are stupid enough to check out "How To Make a Bomb" books in their own names.

I wonder what the FBI would think of me if they issued one of those secret subpoenas for my records. I wonder if they'd raise their eyebrows at the fact that I began checking out non-fiction World War II books when I was 8 and that I'm reading a book by Bob Woodward (one of the journalists who revealed Watergate).

As a future librarian, I've been following this story with a great deal of interest. Many libraries are dealing with this kind of order by doing as little record-keeping as possible on their patrons' reading habits, and the use of shredding machines, as the article mentions, has become quite popular. At the library I used to work at, the books you checked out were wiped from your record as soon as you returned them.

One wonders what the feds would do if they realised that people can come into a library or bookstore and read a book without ever taking it home, and then one gets a nasty headache and has to lie down for a while.

Although I've been deleting most of the postings about this topic from the myriad of librarian lists to which I subscribe, I've gleaned that what they're really after is computer hard drives in libraries from whence suspect emails originated.
But yes, Cynthia is correct, most libraries have responded by stepping up the already in place policies of deleting patron records, and, more importantly, using software which doesn't keep permanent records of who checked out what item, but rather just records the frequency of use for a particular item. Still, I suppose if the software recorded which branch circulated the largest number of bomb books, the fibbies would be likely to stake out that building. Hmmm...would they go undercover in reading glasses and hairbuns fastened with pencils? Would probably be a dead giveaway.

There are two sorts of laws, those of absolute equity and universality, and the bizarre ones which owe their autonomy only to blindness or to the force of circumstance. The latter merely cover the man who is breaking them with a passing disgrace, which time then transfers to the judges and the nations, on whom it remains forever. by free online poker
