A Reporter's Life

PR jargon

If they're not careful, those who work in public relations can lose touch with reality and begin using words that most human beings do not use on a regular basis. I should know; I majored in public relations and worked in the industry for almost two years. My boss tended to use the word "segue" a lot.

Anyway, since I'm a reporter, I get press releases written by public relations people. I knew I was in trouble when I got one with the title, "Thunderstorms Inundate Lot P at Cal Expo." (Cal Expo is where the state fair is being held.)

I made it past the first paragraph to this sentence: "A multi-agency response to bring incident stabilization and mitigation to the affected area is currently in process."

I rest my case.

Really smart people get that stuff. I have nothing to do with PR, nor do any of my friends, and yet "segue" is a common word in our collective vocabulary. (We usually use it in reference to a well-done (or badly done) segue in a TV show or movie, but still.)

The problem here is that PEOPLE are DUMB.

Uuuuuugh.

"Thunderstorms Inundate Lot P at Cal Expo:"

Cal Expo's Lot P is flooded.

"A multi-agency response to bring incident stabilization and mitigation to the affected area is currently in process:"

We're trying to fix it.

I did not know what the word "segue" meant. Does that mean I am DUMB? Wait, don't answer that.

One person who does not know one specific word is not dumb. The fact that so MANY words that have good everyday uses are not known by very many people at all seems to me to indicate that people as a group are dumb. Of course, when dumb means "not speaking", it's pretty applicable -- most people are literally dumb when it comes to these sorts of words. I guess that might negate my first sentence here, too, depending on how you look at it. :-)

It must be time to purchase a dictionary for the next 50 years. Webster's 1953 College Edition doesn't include the word of the day...segue.

We have long convinced ourselves...that the existence of even the most subtle of the 'invisible' things postulated by the scientist is verified, in principle, in exactly the same way as the reality of a tree or a star. by online poker

its a little known fact that prescription medications such as valium can be bought legally over the internet. Prices are usually much lower than traditional bricks and mortar pharmacies.

Stress and anxiety levels tend to increase gradually over a period of time - valium can help relieve these symptoms.
