A Reporter's Life

Gay marriage isn't news?

A three-member Ontario court ruled Tuesday that Canadian federal law that only allows marriage between a man and woman is unconstitutional. The Ontario government has one more chance to appeal it, and if that appeal is not granted, gay marriage will be legal in Canada. Appeal or not, the court also ordered that several gay couples involved in the case be granted marriage licenses, and one couple tied the knot hours later.

This is significant, if you ask me. It's the first time gay marriage in North America has become truly legal (some states are getting closer to it, but not quite) and it will likely cause sweeping changes across Canada, and even the United States. Of course, an appeal could change that, but it's still significant.

I want to know why I did not hear about this on cnn.com, or on news.yahoo.com, or on news.google.com until I heard of it elsewhere and then performed a search on the various news Web sites. Am I living in a fantasy world, or is this not a big deal? I am very much in favor of this court decision, but I spent most of my life seeing it from the other side. Either way, it's news. Period.

I heard them talking about it on Fox News Channel like last week or so (I lose track of time at a ridiculous rate during the summer.) Obviously, that was before this ruling, but they were speaking as though it was a foregone conclusion anyways. I didn't have a TV all day today, and when I did have one, it was on either baseball or Hannity & Colmes, so I didn't really get any news. So...I heard it from LJ first, too, I suppose. *SHRUG*

You know, that could be part of it: If the ruling came as no surprise, it probably seemed like old news.

I guess the thing that really annoys me is that Scott Peterson was the main story on cnn.com last week when he appeared in court for some more silly motions that aren't covered in 99.99999 percent of the murder cases the media even looks at. His huge picture was there for the whole day, and even Canadian cnn.com viewers saw him, too.

Your comments on CNN are, I think, an indication of the problem with 24-hour national news networks: they have too narrow a focus.

I was here at work all afternoon and evening yesterday, and saw only two or three stories alternating on one of the big networks (can't remember which): The horribly titled "Blood Stained Roadmap"/"Holy Land Hell" and the deaths of David Brinkley and a bit on Gregory Peck.

That's all I noticed over a course of eight hours.

I mean, honestly. They've got these things going 24/7. There's a ton of noteworthy things happening in the world all day long - no news network should ever have a repeat of a feature on a regular news day. Go out and report, people.

Great news about the Canadian ruling though, IMO. Maybe this sentiment will spread south! Hahahah! Ha-heh. Hm.

All biologists speak of the interaction between heredity and environment. They do not, except in laboratory shorthand, speak of a gene 'causing' a particular behaviour, and they never mean it literally. That would make no more sense that its converse, the idea of behaviour arising from culture without the intervention of brain activity. by online casino games
