A Reporter's Life

Suicide by saw

The title says it all, and this is one of those things that is going here because it won't be in the paper.

A man actually committed suicide today by going into his garage, lying down, placing the back of his neck against an electrical saw and turning on the switch. It completely decapitated him, and his hand was still on the switch when his 20-year-old daughter found him.

Why won't it be in the paper? It's graphic, yes, but no more so than, say the story a couple years ago about the "goths" who robbed and killed an older couple, then chopped up their bodies and dumped them in the delta in duffel bags.

It won't be in the paper because it was a suicide on his own property. Our rule, which is the rule most newspapers follow, is that unless the suicide is in public or involves a public figure, it's not published. It's a private thing, just like when someone dies in a hospital following an illness.

Go Layla ... educate others. You said it like a real journalist!!! (I mean, you are one, and all ... nevermind)

A lot of newspapers won't report a suicide at all unless it was extremely public, like someone threatening to jump off a roof for hours before they actually do, or suicide by cop; or unless there was some kind of crime committed in conjunction with the suicide (like offing your own kids first). My uncle shot himself to death at a public golf course in Redding, and not only was that never reported, there was never an obit even.

Redding? That was the nearest "big city" for me when I was growing up. It was about the same distance to Medford, Ore., though, so we often went there instead because there was no sales tax and a better shopping mall.

(I don't mean to distract from the shooting part. That must have been hard on the family.)

I did not know this - guess that's what I get for writing features instead of cop news. Yay, un-knowledge!

I should think it is possible for reason to partially subvert faith; this would happen if, for example, there were a really good argument from premises evident to reason for the denial of something central to faith. That is what people who urge anti-theistic arguments - the argument from evil, for example - are trying to come up with. by free casino online

You might just take Bertrand Russell on a beach holiday, as I once did; but Kant, never. by casino online

Scipio used to say that he was never less idle than when he had nothing to do and never less lonely than when he was alone. An admirable sentiment, in truth, and becoming to a great and wise man. by free online poker
